Karkar Electronics
Karkar Electronics was a leading producer and worldwide provider of cutting-edge telecommunications infrastructure.
Karkar Electronics, Inc. was established in 1959 by Edward M. Karkar, a former consultant to leading telecommunications manufacturers. In its early years, Karkar specialized in designing, producing, and supplying electronic wave filters, primarily used in carrier multiplex applications. The company quickly gained an international reputation for reliability and innovation. As Karkar Electronics advanced its filter technology, it secured multiple patents, expanding its product line to keep up with the rapidly growing telecommunications industry, which required higher bandwidth, more connections, and greater reliability. By the mid-1970s, Karkar Electronics had developed equipment covering the full microwave baseband carrier range, including a high-density multiplex system capable of handling 960 channels. By the 1980s, this density had increased to 10,800 channels—performance levels that wouldn’t be surpassed until the digital era. Karkar continued to expand its patent portfolio, particularly in frequency division multiplex technology, enabling greater compatibility across different systems.
Over 26 years of steady growth, Karkar Electronics, headquartered in San Francisco, emerged as a top-tier producer of advanced communications infrastructure. The company’s internal expansion allowed it to develop, manufacture, and supply critical telecommunications backbone equipment, significantly increasing bandwidth capabilities. What once allowed for 100 simultaneous conversations between cities evolved into technology supporting 10,000 or more. Karkar’s innovations spanned the entire spectrum of voice and data communications, producing state-of-the-art equipment that became standardized by the United States Defense Communications Agency and other government organizations. The company was at the forefront of both analog and digital signal processing, designing high-density and multipoint microwave radios, multiplexing systems, electronic filters, analog-to-digital conversion devices, and high-speed modems—supporting long-distance and satellite telecommunications needs worldwide.
In 1985, Karkar Electronics was acquired by General Signal, marking one of Silicon Valley’s early nine-figure acquisitions. The company's legacy of innovation endures through ERAS Holdings, the family office of Andrei Karkar, son of founder Edward M. Karkar.
